Here and There

The swimming pool at the I.H.C. hostel, a Jaycee project, is taking shape nicely. The extent of building operations can be seen in this picture where basic construction has been done.

Although somewhat rare on the Gisborne horticultural scene we suddenly find at least two Echium Pinanina's growing in the city. Colloquially they are known as elephant plants, the plant resembling an elephant's trunk. The one below belongs to Mrs G. Kelly, 4B Karamu Street, and the bottom one to Mrs Dorothy Batcheldor, 131 Ormond Road.

In and out of town without a great deal of fanfare were these 80 pigeons from the Christ-church East Racing Pigeon Club. Mr Gordon MacDonald, president of the P.B. Club, is pictured with the boxes of birds before they were released early one morning to race back to Christ-church.

The Day of the Triffids is at hand. It must be when plants like this start growing around the place. Lloyd Davis and Trevor Waldron are shown with this tomato plant grown in a greenhouse at Lloyd's place, 22 Manuka Street, and after 14 months was 22 feet long.
