How would you like this in your backyard? It is the new Mercedes Benz tanker to carry beer from Hastings to Gisborne for Leopard Breweries. The complete unit is the largest carrier of draught beer in the country and was specially built for the Wairoa and Gisborne delivery area. It has capacity of 4,600 gallons, the equivalent of three normal sized tankers. The unit is 59ft 4in long, has a maximum permitted weight of 38 tons, and is supported on 26 wheels(12 doubles and 2 singles). It has built-in refrigeration which enables the beer to be held at a constant temperature for several days if necessary. The driver's cab is fully air conditioned and contains two bunks, draw curtains, blinds on the windows, reading lamp, head rests, shaving points, etc. Beer is transferred to smaller tankers for local delivery, under pressure, and all compartments are filled at the same time. Total cost was approximately $50,000. The driver is Ken Burgess.

Dried-up fairways will be a thing of the past for players on the Poverty Bay Golf Club course at Awapuni from now on. The club has made a 500,000 gallon reservoir on the course and an irrigation system will forestall the drying effects of Old Sol in the summer.

Work was continuing on the final demolition on the site. The driver jumped clear to safety but the crane was out of service for two weeks.
