John Timu jnr, the first son of Mr and Mrs John Timu, became a Red Cross baby on the day of his birth, May 8. He celebrates his birthday on the same day as the founder of Red Cross, Henri Dunant. Pictured at the Dannevirke hospital maternity annexe are, from left, Red Cross secretary, Miss Bonnie Wall, centre president, Lloyd Appleton, sub-centre president, Mrs Grieve, John jnr and Mrs Timu and Sister Souness. Mrs Timu is the daughter of Mrs M. Rutene, Puha, and the late Mr Rutene.

Julie Brown (nee Bradley) is away doing a year's stint with the V.S.A., teaching at Tonu, New Guinea. She is pictured here with three New Guineans. The two girls board at Julie's school. Julie is the daughter of Mr and Mrs I. D. Bradley, 251 Aberdeen Road.

Winner of the district prize in the National Safety Association's electrical safety competition was Marlene Tupara of the Patutahi School. Marlene received a wristlet watch and a certificate as her prize. At the presentation were, from left, Mr R. McMurray (headmaster), Mr S. Briant (Cook County Power Board member), Marlene, and Mr L. Rasmussen (chief engineer for the P.B, Electric-power board).
