A recent visitor to the city was the Minister of Tourism and Defence, the Hon. D. S. Thompson. He was in the city at the invitation of the Gisborne Lions Club and addressed them on the subject of tourism in New Zealand. From left: Lions Monty Glengarry (chairman programme committee), Frank O'Halloran (first vice-president), Mr Thompson, and Lion Freddie Wale (Lions president). Mr Thompson later addressed the Officers Club on defence.

A striking display of the Jaycee fountain was exhibited in Common Shelton's window in conjunction with official presentation of the fountain.

An address on television techniques in the area, followed by a discussion of technicians' and dealers' questions, took place at Radio 2ZG. Local tradesmen were addressed by Mr Jack Carter, supervising engineer of television transmissions, and Mr Alan Chisholm, regional engineer for the WNTV-1 area.
