Pictures from the Past

From Mr H. McIntosh, Pouawa, come these pictures taken in earlier days between Gisborne and the Matawai area.

Transported by horse and wagon from various Waikohu county properties, wool was brought to the Puha railway station for railing into Gisborne. The station, of course is no longer there (it was situated near the new Puha bridge) - and neither is the railway line!

After the fires to clear the bush, great stands of stumps were seen everywhere before they were cleared and the land turned into pasture. This scene in the Matawai area is typical of those earlier days.

In the first days of wool producing there were no such things as shearing machines. Here we see the really primitive way to shear - with hand shears!
