About People

Peter, whose mother was the former Rachel Fairlie, is descended from Matiaha Pahewa, the first Maori Church of England clergyman in Tokomaru Bay. He is also descended from a Ngati Porou sub-tribe of the East Coast. Peter is pictured with his mother.

The kumara season is under way once again and there certainly are some big ones about this year.

Nine Gisborne Guides made a trip at Easter to "Arahina", the Guide training centre at Marton. Here they were to undergo selection for the International Camp to be held in Melbourne in January of next year. Peter Moosberger, 18, formerly a student at Manurewa High School, has been awarded a Ngarimu V.C. University Scholarship. Peter is the grandson pf Mrs Mona Fairlie, formerly of Tokomaru Bay, and now of 32 Wildish Street.

Toti Tuhaka, 42 Ayton Street, has two here which are almost as long as his arm. The first stretches from his wrist to his elbow and weighs 4½lb while the second one is not so long but much thicker and weighs 4lb. They were actually grown by his two sons, pictured here they are Colin and Derby.

Another whopper is this one held by Dave Irvine of Ormond. It was grown out there by Mr and Mrs J. Foster.
