Saved from the Sea

Scrap metal by the ton appears to lie in New Zealand waters and three men who have been salvaging metal through diving operations in this area are Bob Parkinson of Gisborne, and two Australians, Graham Ford and Ron Hutchison.

The valuable metal is raised by the men, who are experienced divers, and brought ashore to be sorted and cleaned before selling. They have worked on the wrecks of the Star of Canada at Gisborne, the Manaia off the New Plymouth coast, and the Taranaki at Tauranga. They are now working on the Port Elliott off East Cape which sank there in 1924.
