Up With the Times

The new coronary and intensive care unit was opened recently at Cook Hospital. This section of the hospital has some ultra-modern and very sophisticated electronic equipment for care and attention of patients with serious heart conditions or who are suffering from severe heart attacks.

It's "heartening" to know that in the event of trouble of this kind (and it seems to be on the increase) our hospital is so well equipped to cope.

One of the three cubicles in the unit. Each cubicle has a cardiac monitor, shown here on the wall to right of the picture. This is attached to the patient in the cubicle and gives a continual electro-cardiograph recording of his condition.

Each monitor is connected to a central control monitor which has an enlarged oscilloscope. On this screen is relayed the heartbeat of each patient simultaneously, and any abnormality is easily discernible and can be attended to quickly. This also means that one nurse can keep the three patients under constant surveillance.

This electrocardiograph machine can print a graph of every heartbeat of tthe patient, thereby giving a permanent record for future reference. This machine is activated manually, or automatically when the heartbeat alters from a rate preset on the machine.
