Keep It Clean!

The Department of Health ia instituting a national campaign this month to awaken the public to the poor food handling habits of some of its members.

Over recent years restaurants, hotels and eating-houses have been upgraded to such an extent that food is prepared under the best possible conditions, and held for sale under maximum protection from germ carrying agents.

It is a pity then that some people unthinkingly undo the good of these preparations by poor food handling procedures, particularly in establishments where self service is available.

Do You take one of those delicious cream cakes then Lick Your Fingers, like the person in the picture at right, before taking another article of food? Do you say anything to people you see doing this? The tongs are there for the express purpose of eliminating this sort of thing.

Another bad habit is that of lifting the bread to look at the filling in a sandwich.

Not only in eating houses, however, do we have the problem of bad food handling by members qf the public.

Some buyers believe that packaged meat is so wrapped that an appreciable amount of fat is contained in the middle. They then proceed to stick their finger through the wrapping and into the package to see if this is so. They don't always buy either!

Squeezing of fruit only bruises the merchandise and spoils it for both the store and the future customer.

Some people dig deep into the deepfreeze (ask them why) then leave the food above the snowline with consequent defrosting and spoilage. Later customers then blame the shop. These pictures were posed but are based on Actual Fact! What else have you seen?
