Phillumeny

People and Their Hobbies

Eh? Yes. Phillumeny - or, to you, the collecting of matchbox labels. And if you think there's not much in that, Mrs Joyce Weir, 15 Oman Road, has more than 60,000 in her collection.

She has collected them since 1933, when she was a young girl. There is only one other person in New Zealand with more labels and that is a woman in Auckland who has 65,000.

Mrs Weir has more than 50 contacts overseas with whom she swaps labels. She has displayed her collection of labels several times for various organisations, the most recent being in connection with a display by the New Zealand Shipping Company.

A special printing of labels was made in 1938 in honour of the Australian Test Team which included Bradman, Barnes, McCabe and Barnett.

There have been some very exalted labels. Top left and right were printed for Swedish royalty, the centre one for King Frederick VIII of Denmark, the bottom left is a private label created for Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark (this is a very rare label), and at bottom right is one patterned for King Farouk of Egypt.
