"The Apple Affair"

Sipping cider through a straw would be chicken feed compared to peeling apples the way some of the contestants did in the recent apple peeling contest.

Organised by the Apple and Pear Board and the commercial radio network the contest was worth $400 to the winner. The prize was a family holiday by air, with all expenses paid, to anywhere in New Zealand.

At 2ZC some good lengths of apple peel were obtained but came nowhere near the fantastic 43ft 5¼ins gotten off one apple by Arthur Davis of Masterton.

Winner of the Gisborne final with 28ft 3in of peel was Mrs Muriel Mitchell of Atkinson Street.
