Around The Schools

The Secondary Schools' Conference was held in the Poho-o-rawiri Hall on August 10 and 11. Various papers were presented by qualified speakers to representatives of schools from Hick's Bay to Wairoa.

Two of the speakers at the student conference were Michael Malone and Val Hayden, both of the Young Christian Workers' Movement, Auckland. They spoke on Youth and Christianity.

Five students from the Boys' High School went to Auckland at the start of the August holidays to join 150 other secondary school pupils on an educational 17-day cruise. The students sailed on the "Kuala Lumpur" and were visiting Tonga, Western Samoa, Fiji and Lautoka. To take up his appointment as the new principal of Inglewood High School is popular assistant principal of Lytton High School, Mr Jack Porter. He is pictured with his wife Sheila and, from left, daughters Jillian, Linley and Wendy.

Retiring from teaching after spending the past eleven years at the Te Hapara School is Mrs R. Terry. At a function held in her honour she was presented with a handsome coffee table. Wishing Mrs Terry a happy retirement is the chairman of the school committee, Mr D. Worsnop, while at right is the president of the Te Hapara P.T.A., Mr M. Jury.

Janet Zame won the Anthony Eden Cup in the Secondary School Public Speaking Contest organised by the Royal Overseas League. The contest was held in Christchurch on August 28. Janet is a pupil of St. Mary's College.
