Potent And Powerful

The first of four new Oberon-class patrol submarines to join Australia's submarine force for 35 years is the H.M.A.S. Oxley. This powerful and potent vessel paid a three-day visit to Gisborne recently.

The Oxley is 295ft long, has a beam of 26ft, a draught of 18ft and a displacement of 2,030 tons. She carries a complement of six officers and 55 sailors and was commissioned on March 22, 1967.

She has six bow and two stern torpedo tubes and is capable of firing various types of torpedo including electrically propelled homing torpedos.

The many functions of the submarine are controlled by a variety of power sources, utilising electricity, compressed air, hydraulics and diesel power.
