Bowling Season Opens

×

Out of a cloudy and often wet spring, Gisborne bowlers plucked a fine sunny Saturday to open their season on October 1. Attendances were large at all greens, which looked to be in fine order, unless they were a trifle heavy after the rain. The scene above is at the Gisborne Club's green, in wainui Road, where the pavilion is gay with bunting and the flag is flying as members prepare for the afternoon's play.

Largest opening day attendance ever greeted the Mayoress, Mrs Barker, as she opened the season at the Riverside Ladies' Club in Disraeli Street. Players were welcomed by the club president, Mrs Gibson.

Memorial unveiled

First of the afternoon's functions was at the R.S.A. Club in Wainui Road, where memorial gates honouring the late Mr A. H. Lange were dedicated and opened.

Mr Lange served in the first World War, in which he lost an arm, and subsequently served as secretary of the Gisborne R.S.A. for a number of years, notably as its first organising secretary immediately after the war.
