Largest Ship Yet

×

The largest ship to berth in the Kaiti Basin so far was the freighter Kaponga, which came in on September 16. She was 2771 tons gross, and brought general cargo and timber from Sydney and Newcastle. Other big ships to come into the harbour were the Baltraffic, 3295 tons, during the war, and the Union Power, 3805 tons, three years ago. These were turned in the basin, but were moored in the fairway.
Photographs on this page show the Kaponga coming up the channel and taking the turn opposite the wharf office. On opposite page, launch is seen manoeuvring ship in basin.
