A recent visitor to Gisborne was Roberta Standen of Victoria, Australia, who was on a three months' trip to New Zealand. The trip was part of a scholarship awarded by the A.N.Z. Bank and the Country Girls' Club of New Zealand. In Gisborne, Roberta stayed with Audrey Richards who is teaching at Intermediate. The girls had previously met at Ballarat when Audrey was in Australia. From left are Audrey Richards, Roberta Standen and Elva Seed, a past president of the Country Girls' Club.

An interesting incident in connection with the recent visit of the Governor General is brought to mind in this picture. In 1921 a person of some distinction was playing cricket in Gisborne when he found he had to despatch a telegram. The quickest way was for a young reporter, who was on the job for the local paper, to take down the message and pass it on to the Post Office. The person of some distinction was the then Governor General Lord Jellicoe and the reporter was our present Mayor, Mr Harry Barker, who had the honour of greeting Sir Arthur and Lady Porritt on their visit.

After a journey of some thousands of miles a letter from a client to his butcher eventually reached its destination. The latter, instead of going to the Makaraka Butchery ended up at Mahasarakham in Thailand. It found its way back to New Zealand with an accompanying letter from a Captain R. T. Bennett who stated that the letter probably arrived there due to the fact that regular mail, from relatives in Gisborne, is sent to that address. As the captain states "quite a long journey for 2½ cents". The number of stamps and their variety on the return letter were also a collector's dream. Below are the letters and envelopes
