Pictures from the Past

Peace celebrations were the order of the day, at the end of World War 1, in Gisborne as everywhere else. In this picture taken on Armistice Day, 1918, the "old" City Band is heading the parade, and is being led by banner bearer Mr H. J. Bacon, now of 20 Oswald Street.

Going even further back we have this picture from Mr A. J. McIntosh, Pouawa, of troops marching in Gladstone Road. The march is to celebrate the end of the Boer War. This contingent was all ready to leave Gisborne in 1901 when word came through that the Boer War had ended, causing a march of farewell to become a march of celebration.
