Memories of Earlier Days

A happy time was spent recently at a morning tea reunion at Ulverstone by past members of the Holy Trinity Girls' Club. Formed in 1916, the club started with about 25 or 30 members whose object was fro promote unity among girls of the parish, to give a welcome to all who wished to join, and to co-operate to aid the finances of the parish in a local or missionary effort.

As well as providing funds for various church-sponsored activities, the club was instrumental in having erected the Wayside Cross in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church on the corner of Palmerston Road and Derby Street. It was erected as a memorial to the fallen in the First World War.

The club started the project and donations from the citizens of Gisborne and the proceeds from sales of work raised the £300 which the memorial cost. It was dedicated on-Armistice Day, 1920, and unveiled by Miss Ellen Davies, the third president of the club.
