Scintillating Rugby
More than 6,000 spectators attended Rugby Park to witness one of the most open games of rugby ever seen in Gisborne. The match was All Japan versus Poverty Bay and the crowd delighted in the fast, free-flowing game which ended in a win for the touring team by 23 points to 15.

Mr and Mrs Baddeley with Hiroji Ishizuka (vice-captain) and Masayoshi Ozaki (captain) whom they billeted.
Poverty Bay captain Garry Thompson and All Japan captain Masayoshi Ozaki lead their teams on to the field where, at right, they "toss", Japanese style, for the draw.
In a line-out, Poverty Bay players Buddy Smith, Gary Hayes and Graeme Allen (second, third and sixth from left) attempt to storm through for the Japanese held ball.

One of the stars of the game was Yoshihiro Sakata, the All Japan left winger who scored five tries. Here Tom Hindmarsh and Mike Parkinson pounce too late to stop one of his tries.
Mike Parkinson tackles Hiroshl Ogasawara of the Japanese second row.
Sakata crashes across for his fourth try and, below right, shows the expression triumphant on his face as he crosses over for his last try.
