On April 7, 1910, the new high school was officially opened by the Minister of Education, the Hon. G. Fowlds. In his opening speech Mr Fowlds referred to the cost of the building, which was £4,500. This picture, which comes from Frank deLautour, now living in Auckland, shows the Hon. G. Fowlds, the Mayor, Mr W. D. Lyanar, the chairman of the board of governors, and their wives, on the steps of the school at the opening ceremony.

From Mr Bob Terry, of the Lands and Survey Department, comes this photo of the staff of the department taken in 1929. Some in the picture have passed on but others are still in Gisborne, been promoted through the department to other centres or have progressed to other pastures. In the back row, from left, at number two we have Basil Dodge who is now manager of the T.A.B. ; at three Ken Bell, now chief cartographer in Darwin, Australia; at five Charlie Greig, retired but still doing athletic massaging; at six Jim Berry, who retired recently from the Maori Affairs; at seven Bob Terry, sectional draughtsman with the Lands and Survey; at eight Dick Lunn who retired back to Gisborne from the department in Te Kulti; at nine Jim Craig who is with Winston's in Auckland and at ten Ru Walker. At the right end of the front row is Alf Hampton who retired as chief cartographer from the Lands and Survey Department in Wellington. The original picture was taken outside the old courthouse.
