What's New in Industry

The Eastern Bottling Company's new premises in Aberdeen Road are now fully operational.

The original factory, formerly D. J. Barry's and opened in 1890, was taken over by the Eastern Bottling Company in 1959, and the new premises were opened early this year. The new 26,000 square foot building contains warehouse and storeroom as well as the factory which turns out cordials, fruit extracts, Coca Cola, Fanta, soft drinks and milk shake flavours.

This machine, mixing syrup and carbonated water, is making lemonade. The quart bottles are processed in cleaning solutions and rinsing waters at controlled temperatures for 20 minutes then pass by Eddie Grey, on the left, for inspection for faults and cleanliness. They are then filled and capped under the supervision of Noel White, charge hand filler operator. In the next stage the bottles are tumbled by machine (centre left) for thorough mixing, after which they are automatically labelled (bottom left). The machine processes 2,100 quart bottles an hour, or 4,100 pint bottles in the same time.

The old factory, opposite the new one, has been updated to house the water purification plant in an area of 1,400 square feet, with additional space for the lemon juice extraction plant.

The water purification plant can process 1,200 gallons per hour and the area has a storage capacity for 50,000 gallons of untreated and treated water.
