Due to the increased demand for electric power in Gisborne and the surrounding districts, the New Zealand Electricity Department has had to increase its capacity and equipment at the Valley Road sub-station.

Over the past few months this plant has been progressively installed.

The increase is one third on the 11 kilo-volt plant (bringing the total to 30 milli-volt amps), and one half on the 50 kilo-volt plant (bringing the total to 20 milli-volt amps). This should meet the demand for electricity in the area for the next 15 to 20 years.

The sub-station, which is manned by two operators, Brian Walters, O.I.C. , and Bob Baker, second operator, was commissioned in 1954 with one bank of transformers. It now has four banks. Previous to 1954 the Patutahi station was the source of supply.
