The Minister of Justice, the Hon R. J. Hanan, officially laid the foundation stone for the new courthouse building.
After half a century of telegraph communication by morse code, the system was discontinued on the coast. The circuit was superseded by a teleprinter link with Ruatoria which became the centre for other coast areas. Mr Bill Williams is seen sending the last message by the old method.
Te Hapara's new Presbyterian Church in Kowhai Street was formally opened by the Moderator of the Gisborne presbytery, the Rev S. J. McCay.
A long established land mark at Makaraka, McDonald's Racing Stables, were demolished to make way for a mordern new stable. The 65-year-old building had housed many class horses including that champion of the turf, Kings Ransom.
