A Notable Career

An 80th birthday celebrant of some note is Miss Ella Newman of 18 Carnarvon Street. A small family party was held to mark the occasion. Miss Newman has led an eventful life.

After training as a nurse in Napier Miss Newman joined the Melanesian Anglican Missionary Service and spent two years on the island of Mota in the Hebrides. She then spent 18 years in charge of the Manutuke Maori mission, after which she served as teacher in charge of the Ruatoki school. A fluent speaker of the Maori language, Miss Newman retired thirteen years ago.
