Highlight on the rugby calendar of 1957 was the Fiji-Poverty Bay match, played to a 14-all draw at Rugby Park before some 10,000 spectators. A young Allen Rowlands leads his P.B. team on to the field with Fiji captain Dawai.
July 57 was a month of international sport in Gisborne with the Hong Kong soccer team playing P.B. at the Reserve. The game resulted in a five to nil victory for the visitors. An agile Chinese player is pictured making an over-head kick past P.B's Beguley.
The official opening of the Wesley Methodist Church in Gladstone Road marked the end of an extensive re-building programme by the Methodist community in Gisborne. Since 1946 they had built a parsonage, youth centre, tennis courts and pavilion, and the church.
