Five Years Ago
An 83ft former Islands trading vessel, the Macuata, beached at Whangara five years ago after springing a leak in big seas off the East Coast. She was refloated after six days of extensive efforts.
Two famous Maori personalities greeted each other in traditional style when they met at the Poho-o-Rawiri meeting house in July, 1962. They were George Nepia, legendary All Black full-back, and Maureen Kingi, "Miss New Zealand" for 1962.
