People And Their Hobby

Mr Ted Otway

For Mr Ted Otway, 18 Marian Drive, boat-building is both his hobby and his profession. In his large workshop in Disraeli Street he is building a 41ft ocean racing yacht, weighing nine-and-a-half tons, with a beam of 10ft 4in, and a draft of 6ft.

Designed by K. Holman, of England, the yacht has a three-skin kauri hull comprised of two diagonals and one fore and aft. The deck will be of teak.

Three years of spare time work have advanced the vessel to its present stage, the laying of the final skin to the large streamlined hull which dominates the workshop. Another two years should see it ready for launching. When completed it will have sleeping accommodation for six, and a total of 2,500 square feet of sails.

Mr Otway has previously built and sailed the 40ft Ceciline, in which he took part in the 1961 trans-Tasman race. Now sailing under the name of Murihika, this vessel has just completed a voyage around New Zealand following the route taken by Captain Cook.
