Then And Now

Here is a case where the progress of Gisborne has changed a scene of bustling activity to one of quiet tranquillity. It is the Turanganui River, once a busy port and now a placid waterway lined with grassed banks and Phoenix palms.

Before the development of the present harbour, the Reads Quay wharves, with the Dalgety warehouse and Turanganui Hotel across the road, were the hub of Gisborne's commerce, the town relying largely on shipping for its link with the outside world.

The peaceful scene below may again return to one of industrious activity if the scheme recently proposed by J. Wattie Canneries becomes a reality. It involves the cutting of an access channel through the present dividing wall between the inner basin and the river, the dredging of the river, and the establishment of berthing and unloading facilities for fishing vessels in the river opposite the new Watties processing factory.
