E. S. Toogood

Life Member

Mr E. S. ("Bowser") Toogood, of 25 Haronga Road, was elected a life member of the Poverty Bay Golf Club earlier this year.

A member of the committee for 19 years, he held the office of club captain from 1962 until his retirement this year.

Playing a leading role in the new clubhouse project, Mr Toogood was convenor of the building sub-committee, and attended more than 100 meetings of this group.

His life membership was fittingly awarded at the culmination of this project last February.

On the golf course he is a player of considerable prowess, having attained a scratch handicap in 1948. Today he still matches it with the best of them on a four handicap.

Over the past 32 years he has assembled a formidable list of victories, including six district and nine club championships.

He represented Auckland in 1937 and Poverty Bay in 1954-55-57 and 59 at the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournaments.

His golfing career started in the Manawatu district in 1919, and he moved to Gisborne in 1938.

Today, he manages Muirs Bookshop, which he purchased after the war in 1946.
