Making Good

One of the highlights of the hui was the annual Maori Competitions which were attended by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, and Lady Fergusson.

These competitions are virtually classed as the New Zealand Maori championships and Waihirere were successful in retaining the principal trophy, thus making their record five appearances for five wins.

In the picture the group is shown with many of the trophies won, including the Tamararo Shield, which they won here last year.

The displays are on a lavish scale and attract thousands during the Christmas season.

Last Christmas Hedley, the only display artist of this kind in Sydney, arranged more than 50 characters, in a series of tableaux, from the world of fairy stories and for next year is planning tableaux of the Arabian Nights.

Prior to going to Sydney at the beginning of last year Hedley, whose folks are Mr and Mrs Allan Richards of 578 Aberdeen Road, worked successively for Adairs of Gisborne and Milne and Choyce, Auckland.

Hedley finishes a display of Cinderella (left) and makes final adjustments to a tableaux (right).

Since its formation in 1952, the Waihirere Maori Club has had many successes throughout New Zealand. Recently they travelled to Ngaruawahia to attend the first anniversary celebrations of the Maori Queen, Ata-i-rangi-kahu.

Making a name for himself in Sydney as a creator of costumes for department store displays is Hedley Richards.
