Magnificent Singing

Singing magnificently before a capacity audience in the Opera House, the Gisborne Choral Society made an auspicious public debut.

Their performance of Handel's "Messiah", appropriately just before Christmas, with a choir of a hundred voices conducted by John Waugh and an orchestra directed by Wilfrid Kohn, was of a high standard.

The society was fortunate in having the services of four outstanding soloists. Maurice Taylor (bass), Revel Rice (tenor), Heather Begg (contralto) and Angela Shaw (soprano).

Weeks of constant practice ensured smoothness and unity in the performance and the society is to be commended for starting such a venture which can only be of benefit to the city's culture.
