International Surfing
Midway Beach was the venue for the Gisborne Surf Life-saving Association's International Carnival at which teams from Australia, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Hawkes Bay competed.
A large crowd watched the event in warm but cloudy weather. A moderate surf was running.
The Australians proved their superiority by winning the aggregate points title with a clear margin. Gisborne, however, came to the fore to record wins in the two premier events, the six and four-man rescue and rescucitation.
Reflected in the wet sand, Australian champion beltman Jim Ryan heads for the surf while competing in the six-man R and R. Following him are linesmen H. Kenny, R. Goodman, and B. Rodgers, with reelsman B. Duhne at rear.
