Star of the 1957 New Year athletics meeting was N.Z. walker Norman Read, who had just returned from his Gold Medal win at the Melbourne Olympics. Among the other visiting competitors noted in our coverage of the event were Murray Halberg, Valerie Sloper (Young), and Roy Williams.

On January 26th, 1957, Kaiti School celebrated its 50th Jubilee. Upwards of 600 ex-pupils attended the three days of celebrations.

The first step in the Gisborne Harbour Board's extensive port expansion scheme was realised five years ago when its £50,000 tug Hikurangi arrived in port at the end of her delivery voyage.

Gisborne was visited by another walker by the name of Reed in 1962. This time it was the 86-year-old publisher of Dunedin, Mr A. H. Reed, who was passing through town on his way from East Cape to Cape Egmont. He had previously walked from North Cape to Bluff.

The old Borough Council buildings, on the corner of Childers Road and Reads Quay, were demolished to make way for the new telephone exchange building.
