Epic Voyage

Sailing over a distance of more than 5,000 miles in their home-built trimaran, the Cole family made a one-night stay at Gisborne during the final stages of the epic voyage from Kenya to Nelson.

Constructed of English plywood, the 40ft long and 22ft wide vessel draws only 30 inches.

Named "Galinule" after an East African water bird the trimaran and her family crew completed the voyage after 10 months on the water.

The "heroine" of the trip is 93-year-old "Granny" Cole, otherwise Mrs Emily Cole, mother of the skipper, Lt Commander George Cole.

"Granny", with her vivacity and smiling face, belies her age and any strain the voyage may have been.
