Captain Cook Memorial

Sir,--I am surprised at the paucity of comment on the various proposals for the above. We have had a number of schemes, and the local bodies in their wisdom have given tentative acceptance to the unisphere idea put forward by the local architects. This may be the ideal memorial, I would not know, but I am inclined to agree with "Photo News" in its contention that a competition should be held on a national or international scale so that we have a choice from the very best available. We are in the international spotlight for this occasion, and what we are doing should be in keeping with that sobering thought.

Get The Best. Gisborne, 8/11/66.

Forum: The conversion of all streets to underground wiring for power and telephones. Even if the cry is "more expensive", surely the cost will warrant it as the upkeep and maintenance will be kept to a minimum. The new Aberdeen-Road subdivision is a good example of the clean, uncluttered look.

Forum: The Eastern Union soccer team could be playing next season in the Northern League, which is comprised of clubs from throughout the Auckland province. The initial application has all ready received favourable consideration from the Auckland Control Board, and the team, which has won all first grade honours in Gisborne for the past two seasons, is, back row, Len Cudd, Jim McMillan, Iain Gillies (player-coach). Archie Gillies, Bob Elliott (captain), Denis Hill, and in front, Mel Strong, Bill Wilkie, Alan Paley, Ted Dyer and Denis Jones.

Forum: Best wishes to Christine Fogden who leaves early in the new year for New Guinea where she is going to be a lay missionary with the Catholic Church.

The daughter of Mr and Mrs C. L. Fogden, 4 Gordon Street, and a dental nurse at the Mangapapa school, Christine has been Brown Owl of the Kia Kaha Brownie Pack for the past two years.

At a Brownie presentation function in the Guide hall Mrs. J. Adams (District Commissioner of the Waimata pack), and Mrs J. Steven (secretary of the pack), look on while Lynn Laracy (an ex-Brownie) pins a spray on Christine's lapel.
