Sportsmen Of The Month

Two young yachtsmen who have gained a place for themselves in Gisborne yachting are Peter Chatfield and Ian Walker.

By winning four out of the five scheduled races in the Napier elimination series, the boys left no doubt as to who would represent the Poverty Bay-Hawkes Bay area at the Inter Dominion Cherub class yacht events to be held in Sydney.

The event is staged from the 1st to the 8th of January and a team of twelve boats from New Zealand goes over for the week.

Peter, 21, who is the son of Mr and Mrs Doug Chatfield, 714 Aberdeen Road, and now in his eighth season of sailing, is a costing clerk with Watties. He and his father, who is also a strong yachting supporter, built the 12ft Valhalla themselves.

Ian, 21, is the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Walker, 45 Taruheru Cres., and is a clerk with the Bank of New South Wales.

He is now in his third sailing season.
