A Glance Backwards

At a time like this, when the accent is so strong on Gisborne as it is today, it is interesting to take a look back to the city's earliest days in the picture above, which shows Gladstone Road as it was in 1877---a wide, unpaved road flanked by the first commercial buildings in the young settlement. The view is from near the Post Office corner. On the left is Graham and Co.'s store (now Petties), and beyond the horse and cart is the Argyle Hotel (now the Coronation). The Masonic Hotel is the building with the verandah, and further up the street is Townley's Corner (now Humphreys). The High building on the right was the courthouse in those days.
