Wallabies Defeat Combined Team

In a game in which P.B.-E.C. seemed to have the measure of their opponents in the second spell, but were unable to capitalise on their efforts, the touring Australian team scored a victory by 15 points to 6.

The game was played in perfect weather before a record crowd of about 8,000.

Tom Donovan, who played one of the best games of his long career as P. B. hooker, in action (right) with the big Aussie forward Don Emanuel. Behind the ball is the Aussie hooker, J. Cross. On the day's play, the Australian forwards were well matched and often excelled by the P. B. pack, and R. White, extreme left, played an outstanding game.

T. Miller (Australia) breaking away with the ball at toe. At left of Miller are Atkins and Paea, and strung out behind him are Duncan, the P.B. Captain, wooster, Dewes, Donovan, and (far right) Emanuel.

Johnson (Australia), Donovan (Combined side), and Emanuel (Australia) are the dominant figures in this shot taken on the sideline just as the ball goes out. At right is the Australian Garth Jones.
First spell of game was noted for snappy attacks by Australian backs, which had the local defence standing flat-footed more than once. But in second spell, the combined side's interception and tackling improved out of sight, and few of the Aussie's attacking movements looked like being clinched.
