Two Gisborne rowers, both of whom represented their country at Olympic Games, met for the first time when they took a short row on the Taruheru River in August, 1956. They were Hec McLeod (left), of Ormond Road, a member of the N.Z. four which competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and Mark Irwin, formerly of Iranui Road, who was selected for the N.Z. eight to compete at Melbourne in 1956.
Irwin, at the time a medical student at Otago University, was also an All Black and captain of the Otago rugby team. He later returned to Gisborne for one year as a house surgeon at Cook Hospital.
