Although the Tokomaru Bay Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene, its single hose made little impression on the blaze and the old kauri home was destroyed within a few minutes.
The cause of the fire was unknown.
A spectacular blaze during the school holidays destroyed the old Kopua home, reputed to be one of the oldest buildings in Tuatini township. The house had been unoccupied for some time.

The Mangahauini Stream at Tokomaru Bay has found a new outlet about half-a-mile north of the township, and in so doing, has carved a big slice out of the beach.
