"Open 50" Cycling

The Gisborne Amateur Cycling Club's "Open 50" race from upper Gladstone Road to Hangaroa and return was won by Wairoa's Alf Baker from a field of 22 starters, 11 of whom were outsiders.

Plagued by troubles, Gisborne cyclists failed to fill any of the major placings. A spectacular six-man pile-up on Harris's Hill accounted for four of them.

Baker's ride was particularly notable because as scratch rider he rode through the whole field to win by three minutes and take fastest time.
