Chatham Cup Soccer
Gisborne's Eastern Union football team was successful in winning the Auckland provincial semi-final of the Chatham Cup series when it defeated a highly-rated Mt.Wellington (Auckland) side at the Childers Road Reserve last month.
After a scoreless first half, the local team's big centre-forward Alan Paley slammed the ball into the net to give Union a one-nil lead. This was further increased in the final quarter by Russ Jones when he headed the ball home to give his team its two-nil victory.
Union's hopes in the Chatham Cup crashed two weeks later when it was defeated in Auckland in the provincial final by Eastern Suburbs by six goals to one.
