"Walk Safely" Campaign

Because of the rising death toll of pedestrians in New Zealand, the Transport Department is running a national "Walk Safely" campaign.

Last year, 97 pedestrians were killed in New Zealand, and an additional 1524 were injured. Half of these fatalities occurred in the months May, June, July, and August, prompting the Transport Department to stage the campaign this winter.

The major cause of death, crossing the road heedless of traffic, claimed 42 victims.
