New Zealand's latest mop-topped pop product, Ray Colombus, made a three-day visit to Gisborne last month with his band. The Invaders, to play at a series of dances organised by the Gisborne Youth Club. The group, which has topped the hit parades both in this country and Australia, was not an overwhelming success as a dance band, resulting in the last dance, on a Sunday afternoon, being a virtual failure. Colombus is pictured signing autographs outside his hotel.

Unlike his counterpart above, American troubadour William Clauson was his usual versatile and popular self when he played at the Opera House. 2ZG announcer Johnny Shearer is pictured interviewing Clauson on his arrival at the airport.

Wairoa canoeist Jim Gardner gained third fastest time and third place in the handicap section of the recent 144-mile Wanganui River race, from Taumarunui to the coast. The race, which took about 20 hours, is reputed to be longest in the world.
