New Zealand Champions

At the annual New Zealand Pony Club Championships, held recently at Maraekakaho, near Hastings, the Gisborne-Wairoa combined team won the area teams' championship from 13 other districts.

The team consisted of Ann Sherriff, Gisborne, on Forever (captain), Fraser Wilson, Wairoa, on Nick, Lynne Bruce, Gisborne, on Gaiety, and Graeme Maxwell, Wairoa, on Golden.

Fraser Wilson also won the coveted A.1 Cup, top award for riders 17-21 years, with Ann Sherriff fourth in the same event. Lynne Bruce tied for third place in the Dorothy Campbell Trophy, for riders under 17 years.

Two other Gisborne riders, Kenneth Gumbley, on Huikai, and Warwick Tombleson, on Pinto, also competed in the championships, as individuals. (Pictures by Kit Bruce).
