Suction Dredge Arrives

The Westminster Dredging Company's suction hopper dredge W.D.53 arrived in Gisborne last month after an uneventful voyage across the Tasman from Sydney.

After being cleared by customs and health officials the dredge discharged spare parts and surplus equipment in preparation for commencing work the next morning.

The W.D.53's job will be to dredge an outer channel, extending into the bay about half-a-mile from the end of Butler's Wall, to a depth of 30ft. Working day-shifts only, she will complete this task in eight to ten weeks.

Gisborne's pleasure craft have been forced to seek temporary berthage in the Turanganui River at the railway bridge, since their former moorings adjacent to the outer harbour channel were removed to make. way for the harbour developmen scheme.
