Surfriding Champs

The first annual Gisborne Surfriders' Club championships attracted good entries when they were staged over two consecutive Saturdays at Maltarori Beach earlier this month.

In the Junior men's final, Glen Sutton, a member of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving team to Australia earlier this year, caused an upset when he ousted New Zealand champion Alan Byrne from first place.

The senior title was won by Steve King, with Bob Davies second, and Peter Goodwin third.

The ladies' section was dominated by twin sisters Gail and Joan Patty, who took first and second places respectively.
