Top Pop Stars In Gisborne

Two big names in the pop record world, Gene Pitney and Millie Small, paid a short visit to Gisborne last month to appear in the Opera House.

Top of the bill Gene Pitney proved to be an interesting and intelligent young American, whose other interests, apart from frequently topping the hit parade, included the study of electronics. A suave and relaxed performer on stage, he would be one of the most polished artists to tour New Zealand in recent years.

Jamaican-born Millie Small, at the age of seventeen, is currently one of Britain's top pop products, and exhausted her audiences (and herself), both on and off the stage, with her explosive personality.

Accompanying the stars were several Hew Zealand artists, including Auckland's Peter Posa, recently returned from a visit to the United States, and deservedly earning himself the title of New Zealand's top guitarist.

On this and the following pages, we picture shots of the stars, and of their screaming, almost hysterical, followers.
