Beach Races

About 2000 spectators, mostly clad in colourful beach wear, lined the sandhills at Waikanae Beach near the abbatoirs to witness the sixth annual beach races, organised by the Poverty Bay Polo Club.

Some exciting racing was to be seen, with many very close finishes prompting the crowd to much excited encouragement of the competitors.

A programme of eight races kept the equalisator busy, resulting in a turnover of about £1500, one of the largest totals yet experienced.
