The Harbour

×

Gisborne harbour is virtually a man-made port, the basin and inner channel (centre and left) being dredged out from the original Turanganui River bed. In the construction of the harbour, the river was diverted by a concrete wall to make its mouth at Waikanae Beach (right). The port, which at present handles only coastal shipping, is to be developed to take larger overseas vessels. It is also the centre of a large and thriving fishing fleet.
